Why participate in a Manito-wish Leadership Program?

Learning to be a leader takes practice. It is necessary, then, to provide people with opportunities to lead. Barriers to efficient communication must be toppled and foundations of mutual trust and respect need to be built. We can provide those opportunities for your group and help facilitate their discovery.

How does the Collaborative Model work?

The Manito-wish Collaborative Leadership model has four stages of development:
  • Trust
  • Try
  • Test
  • Transfer

It begins with group building and trust. Once a group has a sense of cohesion, they practice the Seven Qualities of a Collaborative Leader through the use of problem-solving initiatives.

Seven Qualities of a Manito-wish Collaborative Leader

  • Builds a shared vision
  • Builds models...tries it, changes it, tries it again
  • Shares a common space with others
  • Lets others amplify their abilities
  • Knows that followership and leadership go together
  • Doesn't collaborate to turn out the lights
  • Celebrates successful collaborations
Finally, after trial and error, reflection, discussion, and sharing of insights, the individuals use their new skills in real-life situations.

The skills are taught by use of leadership initiatives designed to create an opportunity for students to learn from their experiences. These activities range from cooperative games and problem-solving simulations to real-life projects.

What benefits will my organization have from attending the Manito-wish Leadership Program?

Increased communication levels, greater understanding of group work, trust between members, willingness to try, higher levels of self-confidence and stronger leaders.

What tools do you use to make all this happen?

Many! Our staff are our greatest resource, but we also depend on activities such as the challenge course with high- and low-rope elements, an indoor climbing wall, field activities, problem-solving initiatives, small group discussions, action planning, and keeping journals.

Overnight canoeing, backpacking, or sea kayaking trips can help drive the message home. Adventures on snowshoes or in north canoes are also used for leadership metaphors, as well as fun!

Leadership Initiatives

Where does the training take place?

Our Boulder Junction facilities provide a wonderful place for participants to grow, away from their known and familiar environment.

The Manito-wish Leadership Center, on the shores of Boulder Lake, has an abundance of activity and classroom space, as well as an indoor climbing wall and Leadership Library for participants and faculty to use for research or enjoyment.
The Lang Challenge Course offers both a high and low challenge course in a scenic wooded setting. Every year the course is inspected and certified by an Association for Challenge Course Technology approved vendor.
The Smith Leadership Village features four cabins with spacious kitchens, comfortable living rooms, modern bathrooms and showers, and beds for 24 people.

What if I'm not comfortable with all of the activities?

Although one must reach outside his or her comfort zone in order to grow, we recognize that everyone reaches a different distance.  We encourage full participation, there are many different ways in which to participate and still be an active member of the group.

When can we come?

Our Northern Wisconsin location offers three unique "seasons" for Leadership Programming. The fall season (September - November) is an opportune time to participate on canoe, backpack, or sea kayak trips. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are ideal in the winter season (January - February). As spring returns (April - early May) hiking and other outdoor activities are available.
